Jack & Rhianna came to me looking for a documentary-style photographer with a focus on family and friends. They wanted their day to be a celebration for everyone, with me capturing the love and laughter alongside the more formal photos. Their venue of choice was the luxurious Pelham House, located in Lewes, East Sussex. It was the perfect venue for them. It was elegant, yet had a calmness about it that matched the vibe of Jack & Rhianna.
The morning started calmly, with the bridesmaids on hand to help out and dish out the bubbly. Then it was go time, and everyone was on board to help the day flow smoothly. The flowers were being prepped in the courtyard, the groom was finalising last-minute details, and the staff were making last-minute adjustments to the ceremony room.
As the photographer, I’m everywhere all at once, creating pockets of time to capture as many moments as I can. From the last-minute bridal prep to the ceremony room being ready to go and the guests arriving, I’m constantly moving around while making sure I’m ready for the day ahead.
Throughout the day, I realised why they wanted me to focus on their family and friends. It was the thing they cherished the most. Every time Jack and Rhianna entered a room, it erupted into cheers, and smiles beamed across everyone’s faces. The love was organic, real and after getting to know them both I knew why.
Shooting from the background allows me to blend in and observe. I’m looking for reactions, laughs and little moments. The day was full of them, at every turn. From the moment I walked in and said, “Hi, I’m Dan from Noir Photography,” to the moment I said “goodbye”, thanking them for an amazing day, there were so many genuine fun moments to capture. This is exactly why I love documentary style wedding photography.
